KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo (pictured below) said a sports centre for the Sikh community will be built in Selangor soon.
He said the centre would meet the needs of the Sikh community in the state and country, for a sports facility as it had an annual sports event, the Gurdwara Cup, which was in its 68th year.
Speaking to reporters after launching the Gurdwara Cup Fund Raising Dinner at the Subang National Golf Club (Kelab Golf Negara Subang) here last night, the Puchong Member of Parliament said the sports event could be a medium to bring together the Sikh community in the country.
“The event tonight (yesterday) is intended to gather funds and as a show of support for the Gurdwara Cup which is very important to them (the Sikh community).
“This year it is due to be held in Selangor in June. It is the second largest event in Malaysia after SUKMA as it brings together the Sikh community, not just in Malaysia but also from Singapore, Australia and elsewhere,” he said.
Minister Deo said the Gurdwara Cup was a major event and required a lot of funds, so he hoped it would get the support of the Selangor State Government.
“I believe the state government will give its full support to the Sikh community in Selangor to fulfill their wishes.
“We have looked at several locations for the sports centre but they were not suitable. We are still looking,” he said.
Minister Deo also announced a contribution of RM20,000 for the event this year.
